Our ESL celebration on May 6 was a success! The night started with an awards ceremony in the library’s auditorium to honor our hard-working ESL students. They received awards for becoming U.S. citizens, getting their Ohio driver’s license, and for graduating from our ESL program. We were so pleased to see these dedicated students get recognized and applauded by their teachers, friends, and families.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed punch and cookies, took pictures, and played international games in a room across the hall. Students had brought in activities popular in their home countries and set them up on tables around the room. They taught guests about their games and assisted as people watched and played. Some games and activities included: delicately painted Russian dolls; colorful “Lotteria” cards from Mexico (a bingo-like game); Japanese origami (paper-folding); a game using glass beads played in Haiti called “House” (or “mancala” as it’s known in other parts of the world); and even some popular American games like corn-hole and checkers.
We had fun celebrating our students and learning new games. Check out our Facebook page for additional pictures of the event. And next year, join us!
